Hurricane Alex

One of the most impacting days of our trip was going to visit with some of the people who lost their homes (and everything else) in Hurricane Alex.  Despite going through incredible loss and suffering they were a delight to be around
This was what we saw everywhere: branches, mud, and people's personal belongings.  It was so devastating to see
A wall of a house on a tree branch.
You see the little girl in the pink shirt who is looking at the camera? She lives here.  She use to live in a house, but now she lives under a tarp.  For some reason she like me.  She walked beside me the whole time we were there and just smiled at me.  She left for few minutes only to return with a bright pink flower that she picked for me.  She has nothing, yet she gave me something.  Why is is that when we have everything we are hesitant to give, yet when we have nothing we give everything?  That is what it so often feels like to me.  I walked away from this day humbled and inspired, inspired by a group of people who have nothing and who very few in the world care about.  I hope I can one day grow to be like the little girl in the pink shirt.
A little boy in his home. A couch under a tarp.
I am thankful for this day.  I don't know that we could offer these sweet people very much, but I know I learned from them.  I pray that the Lord is providing for more assistance for them and they will soon have homes again.
