Because I work in Children's Ministry I feel like my year is still very much centered around a school year. I still think in semesters and summer breaks and such. I actually really like that about my job! Not that I get summers off or anything....but the pace slows dows!
Today as I walked to the gym I saw the sights of a new season, a season of all of NYC kids being back in school. For the first time in 3 months the sidewalks were bustling, the buses were frequent, the noise was a little louder and NYC felt right again. More than most other places people here really do leave for the summer. New Yorkers get out and tourist come in. The summer feels different here. the city slows down, neighborhoods feels quieter, the office is a little less crowded, and routine is non existent.
I really love summer. This summer was filled with lots of time outdoors, beach days, sunset walks, outdoor cafes, movies in the park, conversations under the stars, fun concerts, frozen yogurt, and lots of time with family and friends I started to count the other day and I realized I spent around 50 nights out of my bed btwn July 1 and Sept 1. It was definitely a few months of lots of guests, house-sitting at other peoples apt, and a good bit of traveling. I feel like every day was a little different and I've pretty much lived out of some type of suitcase for the past 2 months.
But today as school started back and we had our fall kick-off staff lunch at Redeemer it all felt right to me again. Because as much as I love summer I've missed the routine that fall brings, the new programs, the exicement of a new ministry year, a routine with bible studies starting back, responsibilities kicking back in, and life just setting in to a groove.
Seasons are good. Summer was a great one that was very much needed, but I'm ready now for this next season. I don't want to wish it away because I know soon enough Christmas will be here and winter will come. But for today I want to soak in this busy season that September brings and the beautiful weather that the Lord gives this city of mine.
