I've done something a little different each Thanksgiving. Last year I spent the day on top of Table Mountain. This year my mom asked as a birthday present from my dad if I could come home for Thanksgiving. So home I went.
I flew out on Wednesday and very quickly realized that flying the day before Thanksgiving is a horrible idea. Pure Craziness!
Thankfully after a subway ride, a 2.5 bus ride (that should have taken 45 minutes), a looooong security line, 2 planes, 3 airprts, 4 cities, 1 car ride, and a bad bout of car sickness I arrived to the cozy mountains of NC 11 hours after leaving my Manhattan apt.
But then I woke up to this view and it was all worth it.
We spent Thanksgiving morning watching the Macy's Parade and baking cookies for a womens and children's home we were visiting later in the day.
In the afternoon we drove to Asheville to eat Thanksgiving at a restaurant in downtown. After filling up on Thanksgiving goodness we headed to a nearby womens and children's home to serve dessert to the ladies and kids. It was a quick visit, but I always enjoy serving at these places. It is always good to be a blessing to others while also realizing how blessed I really am.
On Friday my dad and I went on a hike along the river. It was beautiful and peaceful.
Friday afternoon one of my best friends from college, Colette, came to visit me. Her parents have a mountain house near my parents house so it's always great to get to catch up over the holidays! I appreciate my friendship with her so much and am always thankful when we get time together!
Friday night Catherine and Mary Blake drove up to the mountains (Gary had to work)
I never get tired of seeing this cuteness...
This one took her first steps while in NC. It was so fun to see!
On Saturday we went to lunch at our favorite downtown Brevard spot, Rocky's!
After lunch we took MB to play at the famous toy store, O P Taylors. We've always talked about how fun it would be to one day take a grandchild to this store to play (I use to LOVE it when I was a kid). MB did not dissapoint. She went to town cruising around the train table and playing with the toys!
She played so hard that she passed out in Mack Daddy's arms. Shopping is hard work for a 1 year old!
On Sunday after church we went to our other local favorite, Binions in Hendersonville. This is always a must visit when I go see the fam!
This time MB was old enough to enjoy some of the food. Girl went to town on the yeast rolls!
After lunch we did something crazy and went and got a Christmas tree. This is crazy for 2 reasons: 1) The Griffiths do not set up Christmas trees in November (we tend to be on the later side of Christmas tree purchasing) 2) We haven't all been together to buy a Christmas tree in probably 10 years.
I had to take this picture for my city friends. Strapping a tree to the top of a car is such a different experience than our tree buying experience! (Think go to the local sidewalk stand, purchase the tree for a very hefty price, and then proceed to drag it to your final destination.)
If buying a tree together wasn't crazy enough we actually all decorated it together! It was fun to go through the tradition that we did for so many years. Dad does the lights, mom give us our new ornaments (we get a new ornament every year) and then we all decorate together. It's funny how different things are when you become an adult. It was fun to actually get to do something like this as a family.
It was a fun, simple and restful Thanksgiving Holiday!
Now I am back in the city and Christmas craziness has begun! Love Love Love this season, but man is it a busy time of year!
Thankful for a few days in the mountains, to be in beautiful creations and to have a few quiet days with the family!
